The Vintage Turkish Oushak Carpet is a late 20th-century hand-knotted wool rug defined by concentric medallions, softened mineral tones, and a quietly open field. Woven in Turkey circa the 1980s, this Oushak reflects the relaxed geometry and understated palette that make Anatolian carpets enduringly versatile.

  • Origin: Oushak (Uşak), Western Anatolia, Turkey
  • Age: Vintage, circa 1980s
  • Type: Runner / Narrow Carpet
  • Construction: Hand-knotted (Turkish symmetrical knot)
  • Pile: Natural wool
  • Use: Indoor
  • Size: 5'3" × 9'1"

Each rug is handcrafted and unique. Variations in abrash, oxidation, and dye saturation are natural characteristics of vintage handmade rugs and reflect authenticity rather than imperfection.

Description

This vintage Oushak carpet features concentric center medallions with interior floral blossoms and buds, framed by double-tiered finials at either end. The open ground is softened by pale faded dusty rose, ivory, platinum, and silver tones, with stepped corner spandrels loosely reciprocating the contour of the main medallion.

The main border presents a floral blossom motif rendered in geometric relief with starburst buds and finned plant elements. These classical Anatolian forms are explained in greater detail in our guide to common rug motifs, where you can explore the symbolism behind medallions, blossoms, and border articulation.

The palette remains restrained and mineral—dusty sage green, silvered ivory, and faint rose—making this piece particularly adaptable for layered, neutral-forward interiors.

At 5'3" × 9'1", Mazlum works beautifully in hallways, large bedrooms, offices, or transitional spaces where subtle texture and historic structure are preferred over high contrast.

History

Oushak carpets originate from Western Anatolia and have long been known for their spacious compositions and softened geometric drawing. While earlier examples were produced for Ottoman and European markets, later 20th-century Oushaks continued the tradition with lighter palettes and relaxed interpretations of classical motifs.

These rugs are particularly valued for their versatility—retaining historic design language while integrating seamlessly into modern interiors.

ORIGIN STORY

The Oushak Collection

Mazlum is a vintage Oushak rug defined by softened geometry, open composition, and a refined, palette-first sensibility. Woven in western Turkey, Oushak rugs are known for their generous scale, calm fields, and large motifs that favor balance and atmosphere over density.

Celebrated for their livability, Oushaks blend architectural structure with organic movement—wide borders, medallions, and gentle abrash creating rugs that feel grounded yet light. Their muted, timeworn tones make them ideal foundation pieces, bringing warmth, texture, and quiet sophistication to both classic interiors and thoughtfully modern spaces.
