The Vintage Persian Heriz Carpet is a mid-20th century hand-knotted wool carpet distinguished by bold serrated leaves and large-scale geometric floral forms. Woven in Persia circa the 1960s, this Heriz reflects the architectural drawing, powerful border structure, and enduring durability that define the Heriz weaving tradition.

  • Origin: Heriz region, Northwest Persia
  • Age: Vintage, circa 1960s
  • Type: Carpet
  • Construction: Hand-knotted (Persian asymmetrical knot)
  • Pile: Natural wool
  • Use: Indoor
  • Size: 7'10" × 10'4"

Each rug is handcrafted and unique. Variations in oxidation, abrash, dye saturation, and restoration are natural characteristics of vintage handmade carpets and reflect authenticity rather than imperfection.

Description

This vintage Heriz carpet features a fully covered field of oversized serrated leaves, angular buds, blossoms, and floral cross-sections rendered in a bold, geometric vocabulary. The dusty ruby red ground has softened through oxidation, revealing layered tones of ivory, platinum, silver, slate blue, dusty burgundy, and powder blue.

The main border presents a partial Herati and Turtle Samovar design motif, articulated with visible abrash that adds tonal movement and age-driven character. The drawing is strong yet softened by time—balancing Heriz’s inherent structural boldness with a refined patina.

At 7'10" × 10'4", this carpet anchors living rooms, studies, and layered interiors with architectural structure, warmth, and historic Persian craftsmanship.

History

Heriz carpets originate from Northwest Persia and are known for their bold geometric drawing, angular botanical forms, and exceptional durability. Unlike more fluid Persian weaving traditions, Heriz rugs emphasize architectural structure and large-scale motifs suited to expansive interiors.

By the mid-20th century, Heriz carpets retained their signature serrated leaf forms and strong border systems while often developing softened palettes through natural dye aging and oxidation—qualities now highly valued for their character and patina.
