An heirloom rug from the Heriz collection
Vintage Persian Heriz Carpet — 1950s | 6'8" × 8'8"
The Vintage Persian Heriz Carpet is a mid-20th century hand-knotted wool carpet distinguished by oversized serrated leaves, geometric botanical rendering, and a powerful architectural medallion structure. Woven in Persia circa the 1950s, this Heriz reflects the bold drawing and structural clarity that define Northwest Persian weaving traditions.
- Origin: Heriz region, Northwest Persia
- Age: Vintage, circa 1950s
- Type: Carpet
- Construction: Hand-knotted (Persian asymmetrical knot)
- Pile: Natural wool
- Use: Indoor
- Size: 6'8" × 8'8"
Each rug is handcrafted and unique. Variations in abrash, oxidation, dye saturation, and restoration are natural characteristics of vintage handmade carpets and reflect authenticity rather than imperfection.
Description
This vintage Heriz carpet presents an allover covered field of oversized serrated leaves layered over multi-tiered germinating plants and angular geometric detailing. Blossoms and minor buds articulate the composition, while the central medallion anchors the structure with bold architectural symmetry.
The main border features a meandering vine and Turtle Samovar motif, rendered in dusty cobalt, navy, mallard green, beige, blush, copper, and chocolate tones against a saturated cherry red ground. The drawing is powerful yet refined, characteristic of mid-century Heriz production.
At 6'8" × 8'8", this carpet is ideally scaled for intimate living rooms, offices, or layered spaces where bold geometry and historic Persian craftsmanship create immediate visual impact.
History
Heriz carpets originate from Northwest Persia and are recognized for their bold geometric interpretation of classical Persian botanical motifs. Unlike more fluid weaving traditions, Heriz rugs emphasize architectural symmetry, serrated leaf forms, and strong border articulation.
By the 1950s, Heriz carpets maintained their signature durability and structural clarity while incorporating rich, saturated palettes. These rugs were designed to withstand heavy use, making them both decorative and enduring foundations for the home.
About the Name
Kourosh is a Persian name meaning “far-sighted” or “visionary,” historically associated with Cyrus the Great.
The name reflects the carpet’s commanding central medallion and architectural balance—bold in presence yet precise in structure.
Kourosh honors the enduring strength and craftsmanship characteristic of the Heriz weaving tradition.
