History

Caucasian rugs are woven across a diverse region historically shaped by Armenian, Azeri, Kurdish, and other communities, each contributing distinct variations on a shared vocabulary of bold, geometric drawing. Lattice-panel compositions like this one, paired with richly colored floral arabesque bordering, reflect the confident, symbolically rich weaving tradition the region is known for.

Woven circa 1860, the Sofya is an exceptionally rare survivor from the mid-19th century, predating most rugs available in the market today by a significant margin. Browse more pieces from this tradition in our Caucasian collection.

About the Name

Sofya is the Armenian form of Sophia, meaning "wisdom" in Greek.

The name reflects the rug's own accumulated history—over a century and a half of survival, carrying the wisdom of age in its faded yet vivid color and its intricate, hand-drawn lattice.

Sofya captures the Caucasian tradition at its most historically significant: rare, richly colored, and genuinely ancient.

ORIGIN STORY

The Caucasian Collection

Sofya is an antique Caucasian rug distinguished by bold geometric structure, saturated natural dyes, and confident, village-woven drawing rooted in the diverse weaving traditions of the Transcaucasian region. Woven by Armenian, Azeri, Kurdish, and other communities across the Caucasus, these carpets encompass a range of distinct sub-styles—Kazak, Karabagh, and others—unified by strong linear medallions, vivid multi-color panel work, and graphic clarity over dense ornamentation.

Caucasian rugs are among the most collected tribal weaving traditions, valued for their architectural boldness and expressive, unrepeatable character. Whether featuring sharp-cornered medallions, staggered botehs, or richly tiered borders, they bring strength, contrast, and enduring craftsmanship into both traditional and modern interiors.
