Description

This vintage Hamadan rug is built on a lattice of interconnected floral top views and blossoms, oriented in a steady, repeating rhythm across the field. The pattern flows from one flower to the next like a garden trellis.

A seed-like inner and outer minor border, also interconnected, wraps the field and holds the design together.

The palette is soft and bright: powder blue and sky blue, ivory and cream, and pale saffron yellow. It reads as fresh and light, a quiet change from the deep reds and blues often seen in Hamadan weaving.

At 4'4" × 6'10", it suits bedrooms, studies, and cozy sitting areas, where its gentle color can be enjoyed up close.

History

Hamadan is one of Persia's most prolific weaving regions, encompassing numerous villages that each contribute subtle variation in drawing and palette.

Rugs from the 1940s reflect village-level weaving traditions, valued for their authenticity, approachable scale, and expressive drawing rather than formal workshop precision.

Vintage Hamadan rugs are appreciated for their character and lived-in warmth. Learn more in our guide to rug styles for collectors.

About the Name

Parviz (پرویز) is a Persian name meaning "fortunate" or "happy." It is used in Persian and Tajik, and it was borne by a son of the Mughal emperor Jahangir.

The name suits the rug's bright, hopeful palette. Powder blue, ivory, and saffron yellow bring a cheerful lightness to the whole design.

Parviz is a gentle, happy rug, best enjoyed up close.

ORIGIN STORY

The Hamadan Collection

Parviz is a vintage Hamadan rug distinguished by bold medallions, saturated dyes, and expressive village-level drawing. Woven across numerous villages in and around the Hamadan region of western Persia, these rugs reflect regional variation while sharing a common emphasis on durability and confident geometry.

Hamadan rugs are celebrated for their strong outlines, pronounced abrash, and medallion-centered compositions that feel grounded rather than delicate. Their palettes often feature deep blues, madder reds, and warm earth tones, creating pieces that anchor a room with warmth and authenticity. Character-driven and structurally sound, Hamadan rugs function as approachable heirloom foundations for both traditional interiors and thoughtfully layered modern spaces.
