The Antique Persian Afshar Rug is a 1920s hand-knotted wool rug defined by a double diamond medallion on an aqua blue ground, wrapped in a dense overlay of intricate detail. Woven in Persia by Afshar tribal weavers, it trades quiet space for richness, every inch of the field filled with fine, deliberate pattern.

  • Origin: Persia (Iran)
  • Age: Antique, circa 1920s
  • Type: Area rug
  • Construction: Hand-knotted
  • Pile: Wool pile
  • Use: Indoor
  • Size: 4'3" × 5'9"

Each rug is handcrafted and timeworn. Variations in size, abrash, contour, and wear are natural characteristics of antique handmade rugs and reflect their authenticity rather than defects.

Description

A double diamond medallion anchors this antique Afshar rug, floating on an aqua blue ground that is almost entirely enveloped by a field overlay of intricate detailing. Nothing is left empty. The surface reads like a jewel-box tapestry, with the paired medallions acting as quiet anchors for the busy, beautifully worked ground around them.

The palette is cool at its core and warmed at the edges. Aqua and sky blue set a watery, luminous tone, while gold, bronze, and sand bring the sunlight in. Black cherry red adds depth, mallard green ties the blues to the earth tones, and ivory lifts the whole composition with light.

At 4'3" × 5'9", it is a near-square piece with real density and presence, well suited to entryways, small sitting areas, and layered interiors where a rug is meant to be looked at as much as walked on.

History

The Afshar are a Turkic tribal people with communities across Persia, notably in the south around Kerman. Their weavings are known for compact, finely worked construction and closely packed tribal patterning.

Rugs from the 1920s reflect that tradition in its confident prime: dense in detail, distinctive in color, and woven with a precision that rewards close study.

Antique Afshar rugs are prized by collectors for their intricacy and character. Learn more in our guide to rug styles for collectors.

About the Name

Mozhdeh (مژده) is a Persian name for girls meaning "good news." It echoes the Persian custom of mozhdegani, the gift traditionally given to the bearer of good news.

The name suits a rug that arrives like an announcement: bright with aqua and gold, generous in detail, and full of reasons to smile.

Mozhdeh captures the Afshar tradition at its most generous: dense in detail, bright in spirit, and full of good news.

Materials & Composition
  • Primary material: Wool
  • Construction: Hand-knotted
  • Dye method: Traditional hand-dyed yarns
  • Foundation: Traditional woven foundation
  • Condition: Antique, mostly even wear with faint foundation visibility

Condition Details

Mostly even wear across the surface to the knot heads, with faint foundation showing through. This is mainly due to etching and oxidation of the dyes and mordants, a natural aging process in which certain dye agents slowly wear the wool they color.

The sides and ends are fully secured.

For the most accurate color, please refer to the first image, which was taken in natural light.

The rug has been recently professionally cleaned and is ready for immediate in-home use.

Care Instructions

Vacuum gently using suction only. Avoid beater bars and rotating brushes.

Use a quality rug pad to improve stability and reduce movement.

Rotate periodically to encourage even wear. For deep cleaning, consult a professional rug specialist experienced with antique Persian rugs.

FAQ

What is an Afshar rug?
An Afshar rug is a hand-knotted rug woven by the Afshar, a Turkic tribal people of Persia. These rugs are known for compact, finely worked construction and densely packed patterning.

What do etching and oxidation mean?
Some dyes, and the mordants used to set them, slowly wear the wool they color. Over decades this shows as lower pile in those areas, with a faint foundation showing through. It is a natural characteristic of age, and we disclose it so you know what to expect.

Is it ready for use?
Yes. It has been professionally cleaned and is ready for placement.

Are your rugs hand-knotted?

Yes. All heirloom, antique, and vintage rugs in our collection are traditionally hand-knotted, not machine-made.

Are your heirloom rugs authentic?

Yes. All heirloom rugs in our collection are genuine vintage or antique pieces—not reproductions. Each is traditionally hand-knotted and sourced from a historically recognized weaving region, with age, origin, and construction verified before listing.

What's the difference between vintage & antique rugs?

Antique rugs are typically over 100 years old, while vintage rugs generally date from the 20th century. Both are traditionally hand-knotted and regionally authentic; the difference lies primarily in age, not quality or craftsmanship.
