Description
Look closely and this Baluch rug turns out to be a garden in mirrored symmetry. A lobed sage green medallion, threaded with navy and rust and set with a small diamond at its core, anchors an ivory field. Around it, birds gather in matched pairs, while winged floral motifs and rust-red blossoms on slender stems fill the spaces in between.
Tall feather-leaf forms rise along the central axis from stylized hills at each end, and at the corners, trees with lattice-patterned branches spread over blocks of tiny rounded squares in rust and olive, like cultivated fields. The drawing is pictorial and full of small incident, the kind of storytelling detail that rewards a second and third look.
Against the ivory ground, the palette stays earthy and grounded: sage and olive green, rust and terracotta, deep navy, chocolate brown, and a touch of ochre gold in the hills. A broad taupe border, patterned with a dark serrated meander and small animal and floral motifs, frames the field in a warm, smoky neutral.
At 2'10" × 4'8", it is a lovely scatter size for entryways, bedsides, and reading corners. Pre-loved and low in pile, it has the soft, burnished look of a rug that has been lived with.
History
The Baluch are a tribal people whose homelands stretch across eastern Persia, Afghanistan, and western Pakistan. Their weavings are known for deep, earthy color, sturdy wool-on-wool construction, and drawing that moves between the geometric and the pictorial.
This rug leans toward the pictorial, with birds, trees, and a hilltop landscape, set on a lighter ivory field than the dark grounds often associated with Baluch weaving. It was woven in Persia in the 1940s.
Vintage Baluch rugs are prized by collectors for their character and their honest, tribal craftsmanship. Learn more in our guide to rug styles for collectors.
About the Name
Javed (جاوید) is a Persian name, also used in Urdu, meaning "eternal."
The name suits the rug. Trees rise from the field on both axes, and trees have long stood for life and permanence in Persian art. Woven in sturdy wool, the rug itself has already outlasted its decades.
Javed captures the Baluch tradition at its most enduring: symbolic in drawing, resilient in wool, and meant to last.
