The Vintage Persian Qom Rug is a mid-20th-century hand-knotted rug woven in Persia circa the 1960s, defined by a precisely proportioned central medallion, a field of fine vine scrolls and flower heads, and the tight, even weave of a formal workshop. Sky blue, cherry red, ivory, sand, and gold give it a clear, jewel-like palette. Explore more in our Persian rugs collection.

  • Origin: Persia (Iran)
  • Age: Vintage, circa 1960s
  • Type: Area rug
  • Construction: Hand-knotted
  • Pile: Even, short pile
  • Use: Indoor, low to moderate traffic
  • Size: 4'4" × 6'8"

Each rug is handcrafted and timeworn. Variations in size, contour, abrash, and wear are natural characteristics of vintage handmade rugs and reflect their authenticity rather than defects.

Description

This is Qom at its most composed. A finely proportioned medallion sits at the center, its floral arrangement radiating outward in perfect symmetry, while its angular, geometric contour gives the curving drawing around it a crisp structure. Nothing is crowded and nothing is left to chance.

The field is densely filled with delicate vine scrolls and small flower heads, the kind of all-over drawing associated with garden and paradise themes. Up close, the detail is remarkable: each tendril is clear and each blossom distinct, which is what a tight, precise weave allows. The borders carry the same refined repetition, with light abrash that adds a quiet, hand-dyed softness.

The palette is bright and clear: sky blue and cherry red lead, ivory and sand keep the composition airy, and touches of gold add warmth. Together they feel lively but never loud, like a garden in spring light.

At 4'4" × 6'8", it is a graceful size for entryways, bedrooms, studies, and sitting rooms, ideally in a low to moderate traffic area deeper inside the home where its detail can be appreciated up close.

History

Qom is a city south of Tehran, best known as one of Iran's great religious centers. As a rug-weaving center it is relatively young, with most production dating from the 1930s onward, organized in workshops that favored fine knotting and carefully planned designs.

Qom weavers drew on the great classical traditions of Persian city weaving, with symmetrical medallions, garden-inspired fields, and graceful floral scrolls. The result is a formal, refined look that is easy to recognize, and this rug was woven in that tradition in the 1960s.

Vintage Qom rugs are prized for their precision and clarity of drawing. Learn more in our guide to rug styles for collectors.

About the Name

Golrokh (گلرخ) is a Persian name meaning "rose-cheeked" or "flower-faced," from gol, "flower" or "rose," and rokh, "cheek" or "face." It is a classic of Persian poetry, used to describe a beauty as fresh and radiant as a blossom.

The name suits the rug. Its field is scattered with delicate flower heads and trailing vines, and the cherry red against ivory and sky blue has the glow of a rose in bloom.

Golrokh captures the Qom tradition at its most graceful: precise in drawing, clear in color, and in full bloom.

ORIGIN STORY

The Qom Collection

Golrokh is a vintage rug from the city of Qom in central Iran, known for fine knotting, precise drawing, and symmetrical designs built around medallions, garden-inspired fields, and delicate floral scrolls. Woven in organized workshops since the 1930s, they have a formal, polished look that is easy to recognize. Antique, vintage, and new pieces are all part of the tradition, and rugs made in the Qom style outside Iran are labeled “Qom design,” so you always know exactly what you are buying.

Qom rugs bring clarity and refinement to a room. The best examples are tightly woven and crisply drawn, with every vine and blossom distinct, in palettes that range from soft ivory and sand to bright blues and reds. They suit entryways, bedrooms, studies, and formal sitting rooms, where their detail can be appreciated up close, and they pair beautifully with both traditional and contemporary interiors.
