The Firouz is an antique Persian Mahal rug, hand-knotted circa 1900, woven in a unique medallion design. Mahal rugs come from the Mahalat area of western Persia and encompass a wide range of looks—from the soft, large-scale allover patterns associated with the Ziegler workshops to repeating-pattern rugs with red fields, to the pieces often marketed as Sultanabad. Part of our Mahal collection, this particular piece showcases the tradition's medallion side.

Description

The Firouz is woven in a unique medallion composition, one of several design directions the Mahal tradition is known for. For more on medallion motifs and design vocabulary, see our guide to common rug motifs.

Mahal is something of a chameleon category in the rug world: the term covers the soft, large-scale allover patterns produced by the British firm of Ziegler in rust, ivory, light blue, and light green; the repeating-pattern rugs with red fields and moderate weave; and pieces often labeled Sultanabad. This piece represents the medallion side of that spectrum. Explore more Mahal pieces in our guide to the best rug styles for collectors.

At 8'3" x 12', the Firouz is a substantial room-size piece, ideal for living rooms and dining rooms where its historical character and medallion structure can be fully appreciated.

History

Mahal rugs come from the Mahalat area of western Persia, and the term has come to describe a genuinely broad range of weavings—from Ziegler-commissioned pieces with soft, large-scale allover patterns to village-woven repeating designs and carpets marketed as Sultanabad. With this chameleon character, Mahal rugs suit a wide range of spaces, decors, and price points.

Woven circa 1900, the Firouz is a well-preserved example of this tradition, now well over a century old. Browse more pieces from this tradition in our Mahal collection.

About the Name

Firouz comes from Persian pīrūz or fīrūz, meaning "victorious." This name was borne by Firuz Shah Tughlaq, a 14th-century sultan of Delhi known for building much of the city's infrastructure.

The name reflects the rug's own staying power—a piece that has survived well over a century and continues to hold its structure and character today.

Firouz captures the Mahal tradition at its most enduring: adaptable, historically rich, and built to last.
