The Antique Turkish Oushak Carpet is an early 20th-century hand-knotted wool carpet distinguished by repeating shadow medallions, interior hook-and-latch multi-medallions, and a softly abrashed red field. Woven in Western Anatolia circa the 1920s, this Oushak exemplifies the spacious drawing, muted tonality, and architectural border articulation that define classical Turkish Oushak production.

  • Origin: Oushak (Uşak), Western Anatolia, Turkey
  • Age: Antique, circa 1920s
  • Type: Square Carpet
  • Construction: Hand-knotted (Turkish symmetrical knot)
  • Pile: Natural wool
  • Use: Indoor
  • Size: 13'6" × 15'

Each rug is handcrafted and unique. Variations in abrash, oxidation, dye migration, and weave density are natural characteristics of antique Oushak carpets and reflect authenticity rather than imperfection.

Description

This antique Oushak carpet features repeating shadow medallions defined by shifts in design density across a luminous red field. Interior hook-and-latch multi-medallions alternate with palmette-outlined forms, creating a rhythmic columnar arrangement characteristic of early 20th-century Anatolian weaving.

The minor borders display partial boteh motifs, while the main border presents a large-scale palmette meandering vine rendered in oxidized silver, dusty slate blue, green-gold, and softened red tones. The spacious drawing and softened geometry are hallmarks of classical Oushak production.

At an impressive 13'6" × 15' square format, this carpet anchors expansive interiors—ideal for large living rooms, formal spaces, or curated environments seeking warmth and historic depth.

History

Oushak carpets originate from Western Anatolia and were among the most sought-after Turkish weavings for export to Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Unlike tightly drawn Persian counterparts, Oushaks are known for their open fields, generous negative space, and softly scaled palmettes and medallions. Their muted mineral palettes and broad, relaxed geometry make them particularly adaptable to contemporary interiors while retaining strong historic lineage.

About the Name

Yalım means “the sharp edge of a blade” in Turkish, and also “fire,” “flame,” or “blaze.”

The name reflects the carpet’s radiant red ground and the crisp articulation of its shadow medallions—bold, defined, and powerful in presence.

Yalım embodies both intensity and refinement, honoring the strength and enduring craftsmanship of the Anatolian weaving tradition.
