The Vintage Persian Mahal Carpet is an early 20th-century hand-knotted wool carpet distinguished by an allover Herati lattice and expansive palmette border. Woven in Persia circa the 1930s, this Mahal reflects the balanced drawing, warm brick red ground, and architectural scale that define the Arak weaving tradition.

  • Origin: Mahal (Arak region), Persia
  • Age: Vintage, circa 1930s
  • Type: Carpet
  • Construction: Hand-knotted (Persian asymmetrical knot)
  • Pile: Natural wool
  • Use: Indoor
  • Size: 10'6" × 14'6"

Each rug is handcrafted and unique. Variations in abrash, dye saturation, restoration, and weave density are natural characteristics of vintage handmade carpets and reflect authenticity rather than imperfection.

Description

This vintage Mahal carpet features a fully covered field of interconnected vine latticework rendered in the classic Herati motif—repeating diamond frameworks enclosing floral top views. The saturated brick red ground is articulated with sapphire blue, dusty turquoise, sand, gold, and pale coffee tones, creating layered depth and tonal movement.

The main border showcases alternating Herati and palmette elements set against a light beige ground, providing architectural framing and visual relief from the richly patterned field. The drawing is spacious yet structured—hallmark characteristics of Mahal production from the Arak region.

At 10'6" × 14'6", this large-scale carpet anchors formal living rooms, dining rooms, and grand interiors with warmth, symmetry, and historic Persian craftsmanship.

History

Mahal carpets originate from the Arak region of central Persia and became especially sought after during the late 19th and early 20th centuries for their adaptable scale and decorative versatility. Unlike tightly drawn workshop rugs, Mahal weavings are known for slightly more open compositions and softer, livable palettes.

By the 1930s, Mahal carpets were widely appreciated for their balance of durability, artistic detail, and architectural proportions—making them enduring favorites in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
