Description

Picture a quiet garden, mapped out in wool. This vintage Chinese rug mat shows a pictorial landscape of small huts, winding rivers and streams, still ponds, and trees. A tall tower rises in the background, giving the scene its sense of distance.

The palette is soft and sunlit. Beige and sky blue open up the scene, while dusty rose and dusty blush bring warmth. Coffee brown and copper add depth and definition.

At 2' × 2'1", this round mat is made for small moments. Use it as a seat pad on a favorite chair or bench, layer it over a larger rug, or hang it on the wall like a small tapestry.

History

Chinese rug weaving reaches back centuries, with its own vocabulary of symbols, colors, and landscape imagery. In the 1920s and 1930s, Chinese workshops developed what collectors now call the Art Deco style, pairing bold, graphic composition with traditional motifs.

Pictorial garden scenes with huts, water, trees, and towers draw on the long tradition of Chinese landscape painting. Woven in a small round format, this one feels like a view through a window.

Today, Art Deco Chinese rugs are loved by collectors and designers for their charm, craftsmanship, and period character. Learn more in our guide to rug styles for collectors.

About the Name

Dongping is a Chinese name. It combines 东 (dōng), meaning "east," with 平 (píng), meaning "level, even, peaceful." It can also be written with 萍 (píng), meaning "to wander, to travel around." Other character combinations can form this name as well.

Both readings suit this rug. The mostly even pile and calm garden scene bring peace, and the winding streams invite your eye to wander from hut to pond to tower.

Dongping is a small rug with a big sense of place, peaceful and easy to get lost in.

ORIGIN STORY

The Art Deco Collection

Dongping is an Art Deco rug defined by bold geometry, stylized motifs, and clean, graphic composition—a look that took shape in the 1920s and 1930s. Many period pieces were woven in China, where weavers blended Art Deco design with traditional landscapes, florals, and cloud forms, while newer rugs carry the same spirit forward as Art Deco design.

Vintage or new, these rugs bring polish and personality to a room without feeling stiff. Confident lines and balanced color suit modern, traditional, and eclectic interiors, from entryways to living rooms and bedrooms, and smaller formats work well as seat pads, accents, or wall art.
