The Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug is a late 19th–early 20th century hand-knotted wool rug distinguished by its bold allover botanical geometry and saturated natural dyes. Woven in the Caucasus region circa 1895–1910, this piece reflects the dynamic drawing, serrated contours, and tribal abstraction that define Southern Kazak weaving traditions.

  • Origin: Caucasus (Transcaucasus region)
  • Age: Antique, circa 1895–1910
  • Type: Area Rug
  • Construction: Hand-knotted (Turkish symmetrical knot)
  • Pile: Natural wool
  • Use: Indoor
  • Size: 3'4" × 5'8"

Each rug is handcrafted and unique. Variations in abrash, dye saturation, restoration, and weave density are natural characteristics of antique handmade rugs and reflect their authenticity rather than imperfections.

Description

This antique Caucasian rug features a covered field of oversized floral cross-sections—each uniquely contoured and animated by germinating plant forms rendered in unidirectional mapping. Sharp serrated outlines, hook-and-latch tendrils, and geometric abstraction create rhythmic movement across the sapphire blue ground.

The main border presents a simplified serrated palmette motif with scattered hourglass elements, while rainbow-toned checkered minor borders frame the composition with striking contrast. Saturated natural dyes in madder root red, jade green, powder and sky blue, brick red, deep aubergine, and ivory give the rug luminous depth and tonal variation.

Compact in scale yet visually commanding, this piece is ideal for intimate spaces—entryways, studies, layered living areas, or beneath a statement chair—where its bold tribal geometry can anchor the interior with historical character.

History

Rugs woven in the Caucasus region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries are celebrated for their strong drawing, high-contrast palettes, and expressive village artistry. Kazak and related Southern Caucasian weavings often feature bold medallions or repeating geometric botanical forms defined by angular serration and stylized tribal symbolism.

Produced using the Turkish symmetrical knot, these rugs were created in village communities where design traditions were passed down through generations. Antique examples from circa 1895–1910 remain highly sought after for their saturated natural dyes, structural durability, and confident graphic presence.

Vardan is a historic Armenian name meaning “rose” or “guardian.”
