The Antique Chinese Peking Square Carpet is an early 20th-century hand-knotted wool rug that brings sculptural restraint and luminous surface texture into refined interior spaces. Woven in China circa the 1920s, this Peking carpet features a bold roundel medallion set against a fully articulated botanical field—balanced, architectural, and quietly dramatic in tone.

  • Origin: China
  • Age: Antique, circa 1920s
  • Type: Square area carpet
  • Construction: Hand-knotted
  • Pile: Wool pile (lemon-washed for sheen)
  • Use: Indoor
  • Size: 5'11" × 6'1"

Each rug is handcrafted and timeworn. Variations in sheen, restoration tone, and contour are natural characteristics of antique handmade rugs and reflect their long life rather than defects.

Description

This antique Chinese Peking carpet is structured around a roundel medallion composition, rendered in bold, simplified relief. The central form anchors a covered field populated by stylized trees, vines, bouquets, and butterflies positioned within each corner and directed inward toward the medallion.

An inner minor border in a delicate pearl motif transitions into a running secondary border, culminating in a main border composed of a quatrefoil trellis flower design. The layering of borders creates architectural framing without visual heaviness.

The palette is restrained and luminous—ivory and platinum layered with powder blue and dusty sky blue, softened by cream undertones. A traditional lemon wash has imparted high sheen and silk-like texture, enhancing light reflection and dimensional depth.

Wider than it is long, this square-format carpet offers compositional presence ideal for centered seating arrangements or intimate, symmetrical interiors.

History

Peking carpets were woven in northern China and are known for their restrained palettes, spacious compositions, and refined symbolic motifs.

During the early 20th century, these rugs often featured medallion-centered layouts framed by pearl and trellis borders, blending classical Chinese symbolism with Art Deco restraint.

Antique Peking carpets from the 1920s are collected for their architectural clarity, luminous surface quality, and understated sophistication.

About the Name

Qinglong is the Azure Dragon of Chinese mythology, one of the Four Symbols representing the East and the element of wood. It is associated with renewal, protection, and celestial guardianship.

The name reflects the rug’s sky-toned blues and inwardly directed motifs, which feel protective and contained within the architectural roundel. The balanced symmetry and luminous surface echo mythological restraint rather than excess.

Qinglong is a piece defined by quiet authority—mythic in reference, refined in execution.

ORIGIN STORY

The Peking Collection

Qinglong is an antique Beijing (Peking) rug celebrated for its restrained elegance, symbolic motifs, and serene compositional balance. Woven in northern China in the late Qing and early Republican periods, Peking rugs reflect a scholarly design tradition rooted in harmony, negative space, and visual calm.

Peking rugs are known for their open fields, soft palettes, and auspicious imagery—often featuring dragons, clouds, lotus blossoms, or abstracted medallions set against luminous grounds of gold, ivory, pale blue, or charcoal. Their quiet sophistication and architectural clarity make them timeless foundation pieces, equally at home in minimalist interiors or layered, collected spaces seeking depth without visual noise.
