The Anjana
★★★★★ 4.9 STAR SELLER RATING
An heirloom rug from the Bijar collection
Vintage Indian Bijar Design Carpet — 1980s | 6'1" x 9'3"
The Anjana is a vintage Indian carpet woven circa the 1980s in the Bijar style, its field covered in floral palmettes, roundel pomegranate top views, and serrated geometric leaf arabesques. Framed by a rich, dark border reminiscent of a painted eyeliner line, this piece brings the Bijar tradition's density and structural confidence to a warm, earth-toned palette. Part of our Bijar collection, it reflects a later, equally skilled chapter of the same design lineage.
- Origin: India (Bijar style)

- Type: Area Rug
- Construction: Hand-knotted wool
- Pile: Natural wool
- Use: Indoor
- Size: 6'1" x 9'3"

Description
The Anjana's field is fully covered in floral palmettes, roundel pomegranate top views, and serrated geometric leaf arabesques, woven in tight repetition across the entire surface. The pomegranate motif in particular carries centuries of symbolic association with abundance and fertility across Persian and Indian weaving traditions alike; see our guide to common rug motifs for more.
The palette is warm and grounded: antique ivory, deep teal green-blue, chestnut, terra cotta, beige, and sanded tones move across the field, with the dark bordering line giving the rug its name. Explore more Bijar-style pieces in our guide to the best rug styles for collectors.
At 6'1" x 9'3", the Anjana works well in living rooms, dining rooms, and other central gathering spaces where its dense pattern and rich color can be fully appreciated.
History
The Bijar style originates with Kurdish weavers in the Persian town of Bijar, celebrated for an exceptionally dense, structurally sturdy construction achieved through a distinctive wet-finishing technique. As demand for the look grew, skilled weavers in India began producing rugs in this spirit, adapting the density and confident medallion-and-field drawing of the original into their own regional palette and motif vocabulary.
Woven circa the 1980s, the Anjana reflects this Indian interpretation of the Bijar style at a high level of craft. Browse more pieces from this collection in our Bijar collection.
About the Name
Anjana means "kohl" or "collyrium" in Sanskrit, referring to the dark powder traditionally used as eyeliner. In the Ramayana, Anjana is the name of the mother of Hanuman.
The name was chosen for this rug's dark bordering line, framing the field the way kohl frames the eye—a small, deliberate detail that gives the whole composition its definition.
Anjana captures the Bijar style at its most richly patterned: dense, warm, and precisely outlined.
